In a climate of fear and isolation that affects us all, we are all faced with practical challenges of self-isolation in a time of heightened anxiety. Just when we need support and belonging more than ever, social distancing and self-quarantining cut us off from others.

Our history of fear, abandonment, rejection, and neglect bring about a new challenge: pandemic-related isolation inevitably evokes emotions and memories of the past, increasing the sense of painful aloneness. When we struggle with isolation it is important to take in the support we do have, to understand the painful loneliness that arises, find ways to be with it and to move from loneliness to aloneness.

It is a natural human instinct of the body and the heart to want to get close physically, to touch, to hug a friend, to hold our dear ones near, and to feel the physical presence of our community. Not being able to be physically close might bring up a painful feeling of deprivation, and the constant attention to social distancing can create tension and a feeling of paranoia. In those instances it is very easy for wounds of the past to resurface. When emotions and feelings from the past come up, our nervous system cannot distinguish between then and now.  We may find ourselves unconsciously regressing to younger states of the self, to a time when we may have felt in danger, abandoned and alone. Even though those feelings belong to the past, they are very real in the present moment, in our lives today.

In this webinar, through sharing and exercises, we will explore the emotions that arise when we feel isolated and lonely and the beliefs that go with those emotions.  We will also be experimenting  with tools to befriend the experience and find somatic resources that can help in those moments when fear, anxiety, loneliness and helplessness take over.

Loneliness is the absence of the other, aloneness is the presence of your being. – Osho
