Summary of the episode
In this insightful podcast episode, trauma therapist Prema McKeever joins the host to discuss developmental trauma—early life experiences that profoundly influence how we relate to others as adults. Even for those who may not identify as having experienced trauma, this conversation sheds light on the often-hidden emotional scars we carry from childhood and how they manifest in our intimate relationships.
Prema explains that recognising trauma is not a sign of weakness or failure, but an opportunity for transformation. By acknowledging these patterns, we can begin to heal and shift our emotional responses, allowing for deeper connections and healthier relationships. Importantly, she highlights how intimate relationships can serve as a powerful space for healing.
The discussion also touches on how, as children, we cannot often understand or identify traumatic experiences. Instead, we develop subconscious coping mechanisms, such as emotional numbness, that shape the beliefs and behaviours we carry into adulthood. As adults, only through self-awareness and resilience are we able to fully confront and process these early wounds.
The conversation emphasises the power of staying connected to one’s heart, even in the face of darkness, and how doing so opens the door to spiritual support. With her depth of knowledge and experience, Prema brings invaluable wisdom to this episode, offering listeners both practical insights and hope for healing.
